Vol. 436 No. 2

Written Answers. - Commuting of Pensions.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

95 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Defence his views on the commuting of pensions for nominal amounts; if he intends to change to a once-off lump sum payment, in particular where a person is receiving as little as £1.26 per month; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A pension under the non-contributory pension scheme for non-established State employees is based on the annual rate of pay on the last day of reckonable service less twice the annual amount of social welfare contributory old age pension payable to a single person. The pension referred to by the Deputy is calculated in accordance with the terms of the scheme.

I understand that the question of commuting very small pensions is at present under consideration by the Department of Finance.
