Vol. 436 No. 2

Written Answers. - Breast Cancer Screening Service.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

114 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Health the cost of national screening service for breast cancer; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Diagnostic mammography services are available to women at a number of hospitals throughout the country. My Department is also supporting a major breast cancer screening programme currently underway at the Mater Foundation. This programme, the Eccles Breast Cancer Screening Programme, is the first study of its kind in Ireland and decisions on the national policy to be followed in this matter will be influenced by the results of the pilot study. Until the nature and scope of the national policy is decided, it is not possible to estimate the costs involved.
