Vol. 436 No. 3

Written Answers. - Crimeline Programme.

Ivor Callely

Question:

83 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the success of the "Crimeline" television programme in improving public awareness of crime issues and in the detection of crime; if she will support an extension of the "Crimeline" programme; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Since its introduction in September 1992, the "Crimeline" television programme, which is broadcast once a month, has proved to be very successful in assisting in the detection of crime. The programme has directly resulted in a substantial number of criminals being apprehended through information provided by the public. It has also heightened public awareness in the fight against crime and the importance of the public's role in tackling it. The programme provides a facility whereby the public can make direct and immediate contact with Garda investigators. In addition to the re-enactments of crime and security videos of actual crimes, the programme also carries special features on missing persons, road safety, drug abuse, fraud, and home security.

The Garda authorities are satisfied with the present arrangements and have no plans at present to extend the "Crimeline" programme. However, this aspect is kept under review, as indeed is the format and presentation of the programme.
