Question:

84 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the total number of deaths due to road traffic accidents in 1993; if she will give a breakdown of traffic fatalities in each divisional area; if there are identifiable black spots in each division; the measures, if any, she will be introducing to address this; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the statistical information requested is as follows:

Information for the months of October and November is not yet available.
Where the Garda are of the view that remedial action is necessary on any particular road, such as the provision of road signs, this is brought to the notice of the local authority concerned.
The Garda are committed to the rigourous enforcement of the road traffic laws. As a measure of this commitment, the Garda conduct special enforcement campaigns in areas of high accident frequency in an effort to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities caused by road traffic accidents.
