Vol. 436 No. 8

Written Answers. - Drug Target Scheme.

Ivor Callely

Question:

88 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the difficulties some pharmaceutical companies are experiencing due to the loss of sales of their product on the Irish market as a result of his Department's policy on doctors' targets for prescribing; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The objective of the health service is to ensure that patients receive the highest quality service and that available resources are used in the most cost-effective manner possible to meet this end. The policies being pursued by my Department are framed in this context.

The voluntary indicative drug target scheme recognises the responsibility of medical practitioners to ensure that all necessary care is being provided to patients.
