Vol. 436 No. 8

Written Answers. - Amalgamation of Post-Primary Schools.

Paul McGrath

Question:

90 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education the criteria used to put an amalgamation of post-primary schools in place; her views on such amalgamations; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

One of the fundamental aims of the future planning of post-primary education will continue to be the achievement of a reasonable equality of education opportunity for all pupils. The post-primary school of the future will need to be of a sufficient size to offer a comprehensive programme suitable for a wide range of abilities and aptitudes and strike a balance between academic and practical subjects. In addition to the junior and senior cycle programmes, schools will be expected to contribute to the development of adult and continuing education, including community education.

Account also has to be taken of the expected fall in school enrolments in the longer term, the fact that a significant proportion of post-primary schools have low enrolments and the need for the Department to make best use of the limited resources available.

The issues mentioned above bring into focus the question of the closure or amalgamation of small schools and in certain circumstances the building of new catchment schools. My Department's policy on the reorganisation of school facilities in appropriate centres will continue to be pursued by seeking consensus between the local interested parties.
