Vol. 437 No. 1

Written Answers. - Air Passenger Transport.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

55 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications his preferred options in respect of air passenger transport for the next five years with particular reference to the role of the national airline; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have already outlined to the House on a number of occasions what the objectives of Irish aviation policy are. I have also said that this policy has been, and will be, continually adapted to take account of changing trends and to derive the maximum possible benefit from such changes for the Irish economy.

There have been major regulatory changes towards liberalisation of international air transport in recent years. There is also increasing pressure for freer worldwide trade in aviation, in line with developments in other internationally-traded goods and services negotiated under the GATT.
Against this background, and following consultations with the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. I am currently preparing an up-to-date paper on Irish aviation policy which I hope to publish shortly.
