Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment Campaign.

Michael Noonan

Question:

264 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Justice when she plans to conduct the next Garda recruitment campaign; the number of gardaí she intends recruiting; if the competition will recruit gardaí on a one year basis or will be phased over a number of years; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

On 14 December 1993, I announced the details of a comprehensive 13 point crime fighting plan which amounts to the most concentrated effort to tackle crime in recent decades. One of the key elements of the plan is the recruitment of 350 new recruits for An Garda Síochána in each of the three years 1995-1997 to maintain the strength of the force at its present level.

The precise details of the recruitment process have yet to be finalised with the Civil Service Commission, including such matters as the desirability, or otherwise, of the phasing of competitions over the period.
