630 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education whether she will award an M1 grant to a person (details supplied) in County Kildare, who is currently attending St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, County Kildare; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
Kildare County Council is the body statutorily entrusted with the administration of the higher education grants scheme in this case. I understand from the council that a full maintenance grant at the "adjacent" rate was awarded on the basis that, in accordance with the terms of the scheme, the person in question could reasonably be expected to travel daily between his normal family residence and the college. I also understand that the council is reviewing its decision in light of an appeal from the candidate in question.
I would refer the Deputy to the council for any further information he may require.
