Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Grants.

Johnny Fox

Question:

77 Mr. J. Fox asked the Minister for Education if she will consider an increase in the funding of voluntary secondary schools-community and comprehensive schools so that their funding is adequate to meet the needs of their pupils, without the necessity for voluntary contributions or fund-raising.

It is my intention to increase grants to schools as the availability of resources permits. I am reviewing the level of grants towards the recurrent costs of voluntary secondary schools and of community and comprehensive schools for 1994 in the light of the 1994 budgetary provision.

Contributions from parents and other sources are not compulsory in the case of secondary, community or comprehensive schools but where they are available on a genuinely voluntary basis they are a welcome addition to school resources.
