Vol. 438 No. 4

Written Answers. - Galway Hospital Development Programme.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

279 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Health if he has received a submission from the Community Health Response Group in Galway regarding unsatisfactory conditions in the Merlin Park and University College Hospitals; the steps, if any, he has taken to address these shortcomings; his views on whether Galway is in need of a major hospital development programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In October last, I met with members of the community health response group in Galway to discuss facilities in both the University College Hospital, Galway and Merlin Park Regional Hospital.

A joint working party consisting of representatives of my Department and the Western Health Board was set up to examine the priority requirements of University College Hospital, Galway. I have received preliminary proposals from the group which relate to improvements in ward accommodation, additional theatres, improved accident and emergency facilities and additional x-ray requirements.

As I have previously announced, I intend to make funds available to the Western Health Board this year to enable a start to be made on these major improvement works.
In relation to Merlin Park Regional Hospital, the Deputy will be aware that under the waiting list initiative 1993, funding was provided to enable the commissioning of two new clean air theatres for orthopaedic services.
