Vol. 438 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Cork School Transport.

Michael Creed

Question:

293 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education if she will restore the school transport service to a school (details supplied) in County Cork.

It was necessary to withdraw the school transport service from the area in question because it was not operating in accordance with the terms of the school transport scheme. A minimum of seven eligible pupils is required to retain a service from a closed school area to the school of amalgamation. The number of eligible pupils from the closed school area in this case is two, with a third eligible pupil from the amalgamated school area.

Unless the number of eligible pupils offering for transport increases sufficiently to satisfy the terms of the scheme, I will not be in a position to re-establish the service. I will, however, be in a position to offer a remote area grant to two of the three eligible pupils in the area and details of this grant have been conveyed to the family in question.
