102 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the total number of meat samples which were tested for the presence of clenbuterol or angel dust in the past year; and the number of samples which were found to contain clenbuterol.
103 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of tests carried out on Irish meat for drug residues other than clenbuterol; the drugs tested for; the number of tests for each drug; and the number of positive tests for each drug.
I propose taking Questions Nos. 102 and 103 together.
The number of tests carried out in 1993 on animal material taken from slaughterhouses for the presence of clenbuterol and other residues and the number of positive results are provided in the following tabular statements.
The use of certain substances is permitted for therapeutic purposes but residues of these substances must be within certain specified limits. The use of certain other substances is prohibited by law.
