Question:

118 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education the total amount paid to a company (details supplied) for the report on school book costs; the cost of printing and distribution of the report to all schools; and the total State grant for free book schemes at primary and post primary level in each of the years 1993 and 1994.

The amount paid to the company concerned for the report on the cost to parents of school books was £33,800. The cost of printing the report and of distributing it to all primary and post-primary schools was £8,000. In 1993 the amount provided by my Department in respect of book grants for needy pupils was £1.63 million in the primary sector and £2.821 million in the post-primary sector. The corresponding amounts for 1994 were £1.9 million and £3.2 million, respectively.
