Vol. 442 No. 6

Written Answers. - Hospital Beds.

Noel Ahern

Question:

73 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on the severe shortage of suitable long-stay beds in the Dublin area for young people who need good medical attention; and if he will make a statement on the case with particular attention of a person (details supplied) who can obtain a bed only in St. Brendan's Hospital.

I am aware of a need to provide more long-stay beds in the Dublin area for young people in need of medical attention. I recently announced a major capital development programme for the Eastern Health Board for the period 1994 to 1997 which includes the provision of two young chronic sick units which will provide 50 extra beds.

As regards the individual referred to in the Deputy's question, I understand that he has been attending St. Brendan's Hospital on a continuous basis since 1985 and became wheelchair bound following an accident in 1993. His injuries necessitated referral to the National Medical Rehabilitation Centre for treatment and therapy. He was referred back to St. Brendan's a couple of weeks ago where he is being assessed with regard to suitable long-term placement.
