Vol. 443 No. 1

Written Answers. - Scholarship Award.

Michael Noonan

Question:

145 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Education the reason a person (details supplied) in County Limerick was not awarded a Trí Ghaeilge scholarship, in view of the fact that students with fewer CAO entry points were awarded such scholarships; the reason the manner in which points are awarded to students in assessment for eligibility for such scholarships does not appear in the explanatory information supplied to applicants by her Department; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The person in question did not achieve sufficient points in the scholarship points scoring system to merit the award of a Trí Ghaeilge scholarship. A comparison cannot be made between the CAO and the above scholarship marking system as they are not similar. In fact the Trí Ghaeilge marking system predates the CAO system. I have arranged that full details of the method by which the order of merit is calculated will be included in the scholarship scheme to be issued to schools this year.
