Vol. 443 No. 3

Written Answers. - Appointment to Medical Council.

Peadar Clohessy

Question:

16 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Health the reason he did not nominate representatives in time for the first meeting of the Medical Council.

Helen Keogh

Question:

102 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Health if he has nominated his representatives to the Medical Council; and, if so, if he will give their names.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 16 and 102 together.

The Deputy will appreciate the immense responsibility attaching to the role of the Medical Council in regulating the medical profession. It is my intention to ensure that, to the extent that I exercise control over the composition of the council, it is fully competent to execute that role with the full confidence of both the profession and the public at large. In this context, I have been giving very careful consideration, in consultation with professional bodies where appropriate, to my appointment with a view to ensuring that the public interest is satisfactorily represented and protected on the council. I expect to make these appointments towards the end of this week.
