Vol. 443 No. 7

Written Answers. - Medical Category B3 Soldiers.

Paul McGrath

Question:

110 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Defence if his attention has been drawn to the fact that soldiers having the medical classification B3 and presently undertaking a full range of duties within the Defence Forces are prohibited from overseas service because of this grading; if he has received representations from medical specialists within his Department recommending a change in these regulations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Personnel who are classified as medical category B3 because of hearing or vision impairment, as defined in Defence Forces regulations, do not undertake the full range of military duties at home nor are they eligible to serve overseas. A proposal to amend the regulations is currently under consideration but it is not possible at this stage to say what will be the outcome.
