Vol. 443 No. 7

Written Answers. - Remedial Education Training.

Paul McGrath

Question:

214 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education the number of primary teachers and post-primary teachers who will be able to avail of the new courses for remedial teachers.

I plan to introduce revised programmes of training in remedial education for remedial teachers of first and second level students, to commence in the school year 1994-95. The aim of the programmes will be to provide substantial theoretical and practical training for teachers in all aspects of remedial education provision.

The programmes will be of one year's duration. They will be provided on a cross-sector basis and will include primary and post-primary teachers.

The courses will be provided in the following locations: Church of Ireland College of Education, Rathmines; University College, Cork; Mary Immaculate College of Education, Limerick.

St. Patrick's College of Education, Drumcondra will continue for the present to provide a course for primary teachers only.

Approximately 120 teachers will be accepted on the four courses, 30 on each. The ratio of primary to post-primary teachers on the cross-sector courses will, as far as possible, be equally divided but may vary according to local demand and circumstances.
