Vol. 443 No. 7

Written Answers. - Appointment of Remedial Teachers.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

228 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education the number of remedial teachers she has appointed in the current year; if any such appointment has been made in respect of Johnstownbridge national school, County Kildare; if she has received a request for such an appointment; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Earlier this year, I announced the appointment of 100 additional remedial posts for primary schools, which will bring the total in place to 1,133. All 100 posts have now been allocated and the appointments will take effect from September next. The posts were allocated on the basis of priority of need, following the collection and analysis of data from schools by my Department's primary inspectorate. Unfortunately, the school mentioned by the Deputy was not successful on this occasion.

My Department has no record of an application for a remedial teacher from this school. I will be keeping the question of further need in this area under review as part of the broader commitment to appoint a substantial number of additional teachers in the coming years. The needs of all schools, including the school mentioned by the Deputy, will be considered in this context.
