Vol. 443 No. 7

Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

Michael Bell

Question:

238 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Education when a remedial teacher will be approved to schools (details supplied) in County Louth; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I recently announced the appointment of 100 additional remedial posts for primary schools, which will bring the total in place to 1,133.

The posts were allocated on the basis of priority of need, following the collection and analysis of data from schools by my Department's primary inspectorate. Unfortunately, the schools mentioned by the Deputy were not successful on this occasion.

I will be keeping the question of further need in this area under review as part of a broader commitment to appoint a substantial number of additional teachers in the coming years. The needs of all schools, including the schools mentioned by the Deputy, will be considered in this context.
