Vol. 444 No. 3

Written Answers. - Veterinary Inspectors.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

29 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if his attention has been drawn to the concern expressed by the Irish Veterinary Union over the failure of ten local authorities to appoint veterinary inspectors as required under the Abattoirs Act, 1988; the steps, if any, he will take to ensure that these positions are filled in view of the need to ensure consumer confidence in meat; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the position of the Irish Veterinary Union on this issue. I am concerned that ten local authorities have not appointed veterinary inspectors as required by the Abattoirs Act, 1988. This matter has been the subject of ongoing correspondence between my Department and the local authorities concerned. I am reviewing the situation with a view to finding an acceptable solution.
