Vol. 444 No. 3

Written Answers. - Angel Dust Seizures.

Ivor Callely

Question:

81 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of seizures of angel dust made in the last six months; the comparison figures for 1993; if he has satisfied himself that the Animal Remedies Act, 1993, will adequately address the illegal use of growth promoters; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There have been two seizures of Beta-agonists in 1994 to date. This compares with four seizures in 1993, two of which occurred during the first six months. The Animal Remedies Act, 1993 provides extensive powers for the enforcement of the prohibition on illegal growth promoters and increased penalties for offenders. I am satisfied that the Act is an adequate basis to address the illegal use of such substances.
