Vol. 444 No. 3

Written Answers. - Food Industry Programme.

Ivor Callely

Question:

82 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the progress that has been made to implement a development programme for the food industry; the submissions, if any, that have been invited on this matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In April 1992 I established the Expert Group on the Food Industry for the purpose of preparing an action programme for the development of the industry. In the course of its deliberations that group sought submissions from interested organisations and members of the public. A list of those from whom submissions were received is included in the Official Report.

In July 1993 the Government accepted the broad thrust of the Expert Group's recommendations and authorised me to draw up a national programme for the food industry under the new round of Structural Funds. That programme has been prepared and is now awaiting the approval of the EU Commission.
