Vol. 446 No. 4

Written Answers. - Licensed Trade Prices.

Richard Bruton

Question:

87 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment whether he has received a report from the Director of Consumer Affairs into alleged collusion in the setting of prices within the licensed trade; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1888/94]

John Bruton

Question:

123 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the outcome of the study which he initiated into alleged collusion within the license trade in the setting of prices and the subsequent widening of the investigation to bring in other related practices within the trade; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2202/94]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 87 and 123 together.

I am awaiting the director's final report in the matter. I am not, therefore, in a position to say what action, if any, may be taken on foot of his report.

However, the Competition (Amendment) Bill, 1994, which is at Committee Stage at present, proposes to give powers of enforcement to the Competition Authority. The director's report may be appropriate to the authority in this respect.
