Question:

29 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health if he will provide larger premises for the Psychiatric Day Care Centre in Westport, County Mayo, in view of the fact that the present building is too small to cater for the large number of people using it; if he will have arrangements made to have the matter investigated; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3652/94]

The Western Health Board is responsible for the delivery of mental health services in County Mayo.

In his latest report, the Inspector of Mental Hospitals considered the overall standards in the psychiatric day centre in Westport satisfactory but suggested that consideration be given to relocating to a larger premises.

In line with the recommendations of the report on the development of the psychiatric servicesPlanning for the Future, the board is developing a fully comprehensive community-based psychiatric service. The provision of an alternative premises to house the psychiatric day centre in Westport is a priority development for the Board in the context of its seven year development plan.
