Vol. 448 No. 2

Written Answers. - Hospital and Health Board Funding.

Peadar Clohessy

Question:

67 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Health the amount of money that was given to each of the country's hospitals and health boards under the 1994 waiting list initiative programme; if funding was taken back from any hospital or health board for failing to meet agreed targets under the waiting list initiative; if so, the hospitals or health boards that were involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1788/95]

Limerick East): A total of £10 million was allocated to health agencies under the 1994 waiting list initiative. A breakdown of the allocation to individual agencies is set out in the following tabular statement.

The tabular statement reflects a reallocation of £100,000 which was deducted from the allocation to the Southern Health Board which was unable to meet the level of activity agreed under the initiative. This funding was subsequently allocated to the Western Health Board in respect of additional activity performed by them under the initiative.

One of the main principles underlying the waiting list initiative is the concept that maximum value for money is achieved in respect of the public funds invested in the initiative. It is essential to the success of the initiative that agreed targets are met. I am committed to this approach and will ensure that a focus on performance will continue to be a central condition attaching to any further funding provided for the reduction of waiting lists.
