Vol. 448 No. 4

Written Answers. - An Comhairle Ealaíon.

Ivor Callely

Question:

98 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the review, if any, which has been given to the role of the observer to An Chomhairle Ealaíon; the considerations that have been taken into account; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2210/95]

The Deputy will be aware that I appointed an officer of my Department as an Observer to An Chomhairle Ealaíon with effect from 1 January 1994, for an experimental period of 12 months. This experimental period has now elapsed and I propose to review the arrangement in close consultation with An Chomhairle Ealaíon. Pending completion of this review I intend to allow the current arrangements continue.

The considerations which I will take into account in carrying out the review will be the extent to which the presence of the Observer at meetings of An Chomhairle facilitated the flow of all relevant information about my policies that are relevant to the statutory responsibilities of An Chomhairle, and whether it also facilitated the council to come to its own decisions on the basis of the information available to them.
