Vol. 448 No. 7

Written Answers. - Equal Status Legislation.

Johnny Fox

Question:

52 Mr. J. Fox asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform in the context of his proposed equal status legislation, his views on the granting of full recognition and civil rights to mixed race families, even in instances where these families have been created under foreign law; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that certain mixed race families in the Republic of Ireland do not at present enjoy such recognition or rights under Irish law; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2870/95]

The proposed Equal Status Bill will deal with discrimination on the grounds of gender, marital status, family status, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, race, colour, nationality, national or ethnic origin and membership of the travelling community. The objective of the legislation will be to make discrimination on these grounds unlawful in education, disposal of accommodation or other premises and in the provision of goods, facilities and services. Services will be defined broadly to include recreational facilities and services, entertainment, accommodation, transport and professional services.

I do not know what exactly the Deputy is alluding to in his question.
