Vol. 449 No. 3

Written Answers. - Lisvernane (Tipperary) School Transport.

Noel Davern

Question:

72 Mr. Davern asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the school bus serving the Lisvernane-Glen of Aherlow area to the local national school and Tipperary town secondary schools caught fire recently and that twelve months ago a child fell out of the emergency door of the same bus while the bus was moving, following which the child had to be hospitalised; the steps, if any, that are being taken to ensure that a properly maintained and suitable bus is provided for the children of the area; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3544/95]

I would like to refer to the matter of the reported fire on the bus serving Lisvernane national school. I have had inquiries made and I am pleased to report that there was no fire on the bus. A minor mechanical fault on the regular bus required a replacement bus to be called out.

The accident involving the pupil who fell out the emergency door of the bus serving the local national school in Lisvernane, took place on Wednesday, 6 October 1993. The child suffered minor head injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance. He resumed school on Monday, 18 October 1993. The accident was reported to the Garda. I understand that the child's parents have instigated legal action and the matter is therefore sub judice.

The overall operation of the school transport scheme is constantly under review, to ensure that the best and safest possible service is delivered. Bus Éireann, which operates the service on behalf of my Department, is justifiably proud of its safety record in operating the school transport scheme. Special emphasis is placed on safety and, to this end, a wide range of checking procedures are in place to ensure a safe and reliable service. These procedures are reviewed on an ongoing basis to ensure that standards are maintained.
