Vol. 449 No. 8

Written Answers. - Disabled Persons' Assistants.

Ivor Callely

Question:

70 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if he will introduce a scheme to provide an allowance to people with a disability to employ a personal assistant in cases where they require help at home to maintain their independence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1967/95]

Limerick East): I established an advisory group in January 1995 to report to me on future policy of providing and developing a personal assistance service to enable people with physical disabilities to live independently. The group is to report to me by 15 March 1995. I will consider the development of a personal assistance service in the light of the recommendations of the advisory group.

A limited scheme to provide personal assistants is already being operated by the Centre for Independent Living with assistance from my Department.
