Vol. 450 No. 4

Written Answers. - Cork Schools.

Micheál Martin

Question:

113 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education if she will provide the necessary funding for an extension at Scoil an Spioraid Naomh, girls and boys, to enable the construction of an interschool indoor communal facility to commence. [5264/95]

I assume the Deputy is referring to the provision of a school hall-general purposes room to serve the boys and girls schools in question. I am anxious to extend the provision of general purpose facilities in primary schools and in this regard I have indicated my intention to provide for general purpose rooms in new primary school building projects in respect of schools of four classrooms or more. However, the pace at which this can be achieved will be dictated by the financial resources available and the priority must remain the provision of essential classroom accommodation and the elimination of existing substandard accommodation. Regrettably, therefore it is not possible to provide grant-aid for general purpose rooms in existing schools such as Scoil an Spioraid Naomh.

Question:

114 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education if she will provide resources for the construction of a low cost permanent structure consisting of three classrooms, a general purposes room, a remedial room and all other ancillary buildings at Gaelscoil an Teaghlaigh Naofa to cater for a projected increase in enrolment figures up to 1997-98. [5265/95]

An application for an extension to Gaelscoil an Teaghlaigh Naofa was received recently. My Department's district inspector has been asked to furnish a report on the school's projected enrolments for the foreseeable future. When this report comes to hand, the school's accommodation requirements will be considered and a decision conveyed to the school management.
