Vol. 450 No. 6

Written Answers. - Uninsured Vehicles.

Ivor Callely

Question:

135 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons prosecuted for not having the appropriate motor insurance on their motor vehicles in each of the years 1990 to 1994; the additional measures, if any, she is considering to address the problem of uninsured vehicles; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5511/95]

The Garda authorities have informed me that the numbers of prosecutions for insurance offences in each of the years 1990 to 1993 are as follows:

1990

62,346

1991

60,217

1992

70,556

1993

76,840.

The figure for 1994 is not yet available. These figures demonstrate clearly the high priority given by the Garda Síochána to the enforcement of the law in relation to motor insurance.
