Vol. 451 No. 2

Written Answers. - Limerick-Clonmel-Rosslare Railway Line.

Noel Davern

Question:

140 Mr. Davern asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the reason the Limerick-Clonmel-Rosslare railway line was not included for European Structural Funds; and if he will have the matter reexamined in view of the increase in export traffic using this line. [6486/95]

The Limerick-Clonmel-Rosslare railway line does not qualify under EU regulations for assistance under the EU Cohesion Fund as it is not included in the trans-European network of conventional rail.

However, under the operational programme for transport 1994-99, an EU Structural Funds assisted investment programme of up to IR£60 million will be undertaken on mainline rail rolling stock. In addition, a further IR£65 million approximately of unco-financed investment on rolling stock is proposed over the same period, subject to the resources available to CIE. Decisions on the distribution of available resources will be made in due course, having regard to the requirements and priorities of the rail network.
