Vol. 451 No. 5

Written Answers. - Allocation of Resource Teachers.

Tony Gregory

Question:

114 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education the criteria used by her Department when allocating resource teachers to primary schools; the number of resource teachers which Rutland Street, National School, Dublin 1 will require; and when these will be allocated to the school. [6724/95]

The role of the resource teacher is to act in support of ordinary teaching staff in dealing with handicapped children attending ordinary classes. To date, a total of 26 such posts have been allocated to the primary school sector.

Resource teacher posts are allocated on the basis of priority of need following the collection of data by my Department's primary inspectorate.

As I recently announced, I intend to allocate an additional 10 resource teacher posts to primary schools in 1995. My Department has not received an application for a resource teacher from Rutland Street National School. However, if an application is submitted to my Department, the matter will be fully investigated by my Department's primary inspectorate and will be considered in the context of the allocation of posts in 1995.
