Vol. 451 No. 5

Written Answers. - Retention of Assistant Teacher.

Patrick J. Morley

Question:

115 Mr. Morley asked the Minister for Education if an assistant teacher will be retained on the staff of a school (details supplied) in County Mayo in view of the special circumstances of this case. [6743/95]

The staffing of a national school is determined by its enrolment on 30 September of the previous school year.

The enrolment of the school in question on 30 September 1993 was 61, which warrants a teaching staff of principal and two assistants for the current school year. The enrolment as of 30 September 1994 was 55 which will warrant a staff of principal plus one assistant teacher for the 1995-96 school year. An enrolment of 58 would have been required in order to retain the post of second assistant.

The only exceptions to the normal staffing arrangements arise where the maximum class size is being breached, or where the school can be classified as a developing school. Since the school in question does not fall into either category, it is not open to my Department to depart from agreed procedures.

Accordingly, the post of second assistant will be supressed with effect from the end of the current school year, and the name of the teacher in question has been placed on the panel for redeployment for the 1995-96 school year.
