Vol. 452 No. 1

Written Answers. - Fraud Investigation.

Ivor Callely

Question:

59 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the time schedule which has been agreed for the establishment of the new national bureau of fraud investigation; the manpower levels envisaged; the total costs involved; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7737/95]

I obtained the approval of the Government for the establishment of a National Bureau of Fraud Investigation on 11 April 1995. The Garda Commissioner has already appointed a chief superintendent who will head the new bureau. Arrangements are being made to bring the manpower level of the bureau to that recommended in the Report of the Government Advisory Committee on Fraud, that is, one chief superintendent, one superintendent, five inspectors, ten sergeants and 31 gardaí. Three professional accountants will also be recruited to the bureau as recommended by the advisory committee.

A total of £600,000 is provided in this year's Estimates for the establishment of the new bureau and this will meet any specialist information technology support which the new bureau may require.
