Dáil Éireann debate -
Thursday, 27 Apr 1995

Vol. 452 No. 2

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take items Nos. 4 and 10.

It is also proposed, notwithstanding anything in Standing Orders, that (1) No. 4 shall be decided without debate and (2) the Dáil on its rising today shall adjourn until 1 p.m. on Wednesday, 3 May 1995.

Is the proposal that item No. 4 be decided without debate satisfactory and agreed? Agreed.

Second, is the proposal that the Dáil, on its rising today, shall adjourn until Wednesday next, 3 May 1995 at 1 p.m. satisfactory and agreed? Agreed.

Will the Taoiseach inform the House whether the Government has taken a decision formally or informally to examine all State boards to ascertain whether it can remove members who have an association with or were appointed by our party to these positions?

Clearly this is not a matter for the Order of Business.

I would be very happy to answer.

There are other ways and means of raising such matters but they are not for answer now.

Except that there has been no such decision taken.

The Chair has ruled on the matter.

Will the Taoiseach consider requesting Dr. Tim Collins to resign his position as programme manager in view of the fact that he is an urban councillor?

The names of personalities should not be used in this indiscriminate fashion.

What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. Will it happen?

Is the Cabinet united behind the dose of salts campaign of the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications in his attempt to purge semi-State bodies of non-Government supporters?

We should proceed to the business of the House proper.

Is the Minister out chopping heads off?

The words "hypocrite" and "scumbag" were used on the Order of Business yesterday, when you, Sir, quite rightly deemed the word "hypocrite" to be unparliamentary and out of order.

The Deputy used that word.

I now seek your direction with regard to the use of the term "scumbag" to describe a Member of this House.

(Interruptions.)

Would you, Sir, equally deem the term "scumbag" unparliamentary and out of order?

I am not prepared to have a rehash of yesterday's proceedings——

The Deputy is an apologist for the Government.

——but if the word "scumbag" was used it is certainly unparliamentary.

(Interruptions.)
