Vol. 452 No. 2

Written Answers. - Roads Survey.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

40 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for the Environment when an accurate survey of mileage and the precise length of county and regional roads in each county was last carried out to ensure that there is an equitable distribution of the block grant; and if he intends to have an up-to-date survey carried out. [4512/95]

The last fully comprehensive inventory of public roads was carried out in 1977. Section 10 (6) of the Roads Act, 1993, which came into operation on 1 January 1995, gives me a new statutory power to request local authorities to carry out an inventory of the public roads in their areas. In tandem with the study of county road needs which was announced in the Budget Statement, I have requested the authorities to carry out such an inventory, which will provide data on the length of the public road network as at the beginning of this year.
