Vol. 452 No. 2

Written Answers. - Dublin Water Supply.

Ivor Callely

Question:

91 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment the schemes and total costs involved which have been approved by Dublin Corporation for improved water supplies to the corporation area, in particular Dublin northside, awaiting sanction by his Department; the likely timescale for sanction; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7782/95]

I refer to the reply to Question No. 70 of 2 February 1995 regarding water supply in the north Dublin area. My Department has since approved a preliminary report for a new clearwater tank and high-lift pumping station at the Leixlip water treatment plant, the current improvements to which will benefit water supplies in north Dublin.

In addition to the recently commissioned north Dublin city arterial watermain, my Department is financing work by Dublin Corporation on the improvement of the Vartry Reservoir production plant at an estimated cost of some £2.5 million.

The biggest investment proposal before my Department concerning water supply to the Dublin Corporation area is contract 1C of the Ballymore Eustace water treatment plant at an estimated cost of £38 million. A decision on this proposal is in abeyance pending completion of the Dublin water strategy study which is at present underway. A proposal from Dublin Corporation for an active leakage control programme, estimated cost £2.5 million, will similarly be considered in the light of the strategy study.

Other water supply proposals from Dublin Corporation with my Department include measures for the rehabilitation of water mains at various locations throughout the city at an estimated cost of £3.1 million. These locations include East Wall and North Strand, Harold's Cross-Rathmines, Kimmage Road and Rathgar-Terenure. Given the high level of demands on the water and sewerage programme I cannot say when approval will issue to these works.
