Vol. 452 No. 2

Written Answers. - Driving Test Statistics.

Ivor Callely

Question:

92 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment the number of applicants who are awaiting driving tests; the cost of the driver testing service in 1994 and income from driver testing fees for that year; if he will give a breakdown of the drivers who passed on their first, second, third and fourth test; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7783/95]

At 24 April, there were 29,157 applicants awaiting driving tests of which 10,287 had received test appointments. A further 5,931 had either cancelled test appointments previously offered, or had indicated that they did not desire an appointment at present. The average waiting time, nationally, is currently about 13 weeks.

First time applicants had a success rate of 51.4 per cent in 1994 compared with a success rate of 56.8 per cent for repeat tests. Separate figures for second, third and fourth tests are not readily available.

The cost of the driver testing service in 1994 is estimated at £3,177,000 compared with an income from test fees of £3,414,000.
