Vol. 452 No. 7

Written Answers. - Courthouse Accommodation.

Seamus Brennan

Question:

39 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has to establish a committee made up of appropriate, interested parties to look into the condition of all courthouses and prioritise those in need of repair. [8417/95]

A major review of courthouse accommodation has been carried out and as a result there is in place a programme of major refurbishment works in my Department. In formulating this programme priority is given to courthouses in county towns and those which accommodate staff. As well as major refurbishment projects various works on a smaller scale are also ongoing for example works were carried out in 45 venues in 1994 and continuing in a considerable number again in 1995.

The sum of £6 million for capital works and £1.594 million for maintenance works has been provided in this year's Estimates and I am very concious of the need to provide the best possible facilities to meet modern day court requirements.
