Vol. 453 No. 3

Written Answers. - Diplomatic Relations with Cuba.

Kathleen Lynch

Question:

62 Kathleen Lynch asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs whether Ireland intends establishing diplomatic relations with Cuba; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8555/95]

Ireland's diplomatic network, both resident and non-resident, is small and must remain so for the foreseeable future, given our limited financial and personnel resources.

It would be contrary to international practice to discuss publicly the establishment of diplomatic relations with any particular country, since any decision in this regard must first be made by agreement with the Government concerned. However, in the light of resource con-straints and competing demands, the establishment of diplomatic relations with Cuba is unlikely to be an immediate priority.
