Vol. 453 No. 3

Written Answers. - Possession and Storage of Strychnine.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

82 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Health if his Department has carried out a survey on the possession and storage of strychnine; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9230/95]

Limerick East): Following the ban on the sale and use of strychnine my Department has carried out a survey on the possession and storage of strychnine held by community pharmacists and druggists with a view to its collection for destruction.

Arrangements have now been made in co-operation with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland and the Irish Pharmaceutical Union for the collection for destruction of stocks of the substance currently held.

The opportunity is also being taken to collect any strychnine which may still remain in the hands of the public, in particular, the farming community. A notice which appeared in the national papers and in The Farmers Journal on Thursday, 11 May 1995 requested members of the public, including persons in the farming community, who may have unused supplies of strychnine to bring it to their local pharmacy during the week commencing 15 May 1995 so that it may be collected for destruction.
