Vol. 454 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Allowances.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

155 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Justice if she will have arrangements made for payment of home allowance at the same rate to all gardaí who serve abroad. [11125/95]

Agreement was reached at the Garda conciliation council in September 1994 with the Garda Representative Association and the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors for the payment of allowances from the Exchequer to members of the force serving on duty missions abroad where the UN pays a daily allowance.

The agreement specified three different rates of allowance depending on the degree of difficulty of the mission concerned. The terms of the agreement were extended to the superintendent and chief superintendent ranks.

As the Deputy is aware, the Scheme of Conciliation and Arbitration for the Gardá Síochána provides the relevant machinery for the processing of claims concerning, inter alia, allowances for members of the force. Under the terms of the scheme, the proceedings of the council are confidential and it would not be appropriate for me to comment further.
