Vol. 454 No. 7

Written Answers. - Cable Television.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

90 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the current status regarding the licensing situation for the cable television network in an area (details supplied) in County Louth; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11548/95]

A cable licence was issued for this area to a company called McGahon and O'Neill Ltd., in 1975. I understand that this company was acquired by another cable company, East Coast Multi-Channel, last year, and the latter company have now applied to my Department for permission to have the cable licence transferred to them. East Coast have been informed by my Department that there are a number of issues which must be clarified before I can consider whether such a transfer should take place. Among these is the question of any reference by the Minister for Enterprise and Employment of the take-over to the Competition Authority.
