Limerick East): General practitioners participating in the general medical services scheme are independent contractors and pension arrangements are primarily a matter for the doctors concerned.
Under the 1989 General Medical Services Agreement, a superannuation scheme for participating general practitioners was introduced to which the State makes a contribution. The scheme is administered by the Irish Medical Organisation which is, I understand, currently examining the question of additional voluntary contributions.
