Vol. 455 No. 4

Written Answers. - Cardiac Surgery Delay.

Michael Ring

Question:

51 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health when a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will be called for a triple bypass operation in view of the fact that he is in great discomfort, has deteriorating health and has already been waiting for two years.

Limerick East): I understand from the Mater Hospital that the patient referred to by the Deputy was placed on Mr. Woods's waiting list for coronary artery bypass surgery in December 1993. Due to the number of emergency admissions the hospital is at present unable to give an exact date for this patient's admission.

The Deputy will appreciate that the admission of a patient to hospital is a matter for the consultant concerned and each patient is assessed to determine his or her medical priority. Should this patient feel that his condition is deteriorating, he should return to his medical practitioner who is in the best position to emphasise the urgency of his case directly to the consultant.
