Vol. 457 No. 3

Written Answers. - Video Monitoring of Traffic.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

93 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has for the introducation of video monitoring to control speeding on our roads. [15277/95]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that they are already making use of in-car video equipment to combat breaches of the Road Traffic Acts, particularly offences involving speeding, and that there are at present 18 patrol cars fitted with video cameras in use throughout the country by units of the Traffic Corps.

Moreover, proposals for a combined radar/video/computer system are currently being evaluated by the Garda authorities with a view to their use by the Traffic Corps to further detect, and deter, motorists who break the speed limits.
