Vol. 457 No. 7

Written Answers. - Environmental Offences Statistics.

Dan Wallace

Question:

170 Mr. D. Wallace asked the Minister for the Environment the total number and value of fines levied this year to date on those found responsible for causing environmental pollution. [16299/95]

The information sought is not available in my Department.

Certain statistics on activities under environmental protection legislation are collected by my Department and published from time to time. Summary statistics regarding prosecutions taken by local authorities in 1993 for breaches of the Water Pollution Acts, 1977 and 1990 were published in Environment Bulletin No. 25; these indicate the range within which relevant fines were imposed. A copy of the Bulletin is available in the Oireachtas Library. Information on prosecutions under the Litter Act was given in the reply to Questions Nos. 57, 59 and 91 on 27 September 1995.

No fines were imposed in 1993 in respect of breaches of conditions in licences issued by local authorities under the Air Pollution Act, 1987. Neither have fines up to now been imposed in respect of breaches of new integrated pollution control licences issued by the Environmental Protection Agency.
